The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) is Science in the City's major financial supporter, providing funding over the three years 2004-2006 through the Science Connections Programme (SCOPE), a Backing Australia's Ability initiative. Science in the City is one of Australia's most effective educational science projects, being an exciting mix of superb venues, professional and friendly staff, engaging exhibits and activities, and science outreach through Science in the Bush and Science in the Suburbs. It is also a very good 'role model' for institutional collaborations. Science in the City fits well with SCOPE's objectives of increasing community awareness of the important roles science and technology play in Australia's continuing sustainable economic growth and social well-being; and encouraging students to consider a future in a science-based career.
The Australian Government has enabled and supported National Science Week since its inception, through partnerships with implementing organisations such as the Australian Science Teachers Association, and through an annual project grants programme. The grants programme has assisted the creation of new and long-term ways of celebrating the wonders of science in the community. Science in the City is a shining example of this outcome, and is a tribute to the efforts and dedication of its Partners.
