A full list of the great workshops, shows and talks on offer for Science in the City 2008 is available below.
Response to the 2008 program has been overwhelming - to deal with demand we are running extra sessions of some workshops. If your first choice is no longer available you might want to consider doing a workshop with one of our package partners - the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Packages are also available with IMAX, Cook and Philip Park, Sydney Wildlife World and Sydney Aquarium.

A hands-on scientific workshop focusing on renewable energy sources including solar and wind. The students will engage in activities using hand-held solar panels, wind turbines, volt meters and model cars to better understand the nature of utilizing renewable energy sources.
Brought to you by Sydney Olympic Park Authority Education
For years 7-9
An interactive, hands-on workshop covering renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Investigate hydrogen fuel cells, solar power, hydroelectricity, ozone depletion, the green house effect and reducing carbon emissions.
Brought to you by Fizzics Education
For years 7-10
Make your own lightning, charge yourself up to 10 thousand volts, and fire an electromagnetic gun as we discuss electricity, magnetism and electromagnetism. Can you build a superfast communication network with a stream of water? Or send your voice across the room silently? Come and find out at the highly charged physics workshop that will leave your hair standing on end.
Brought to you by the University of Sydney School of Physics
For years 7-12
A hands-on workshop that looks at various types of chemicals including liquid nitrogen, acids, bases and fluorescence.
Brought to you by the University of Sydney School of Chemistry
For years 7-12
Become a plant biologist! Extract DNA from strawberries, run a gel electrophoresis, look down the microscope at plant cells and learn about the molecules that colour plants.
Brought to you by Plant Energy Biology, University of Sydney
For years 7-12
Come face-to-face with mini monsters living in your backyard! Catch creepy-crawlies amongst the scrub and get as close as you dare to the fangs of a spider. Then create your own dichotomous key to work out which critters you have caught and build a food web to see who eats who. You can even see this food web in live action!
Brought to you by the University of Sydney
For years 8-12
Cars, aeroplanes and rockets all have engines that work by converting chemical energy to mechanical energy. Exercise your chemical engineering potential by powering a vehicle with hydrogen split from water. Water will be split into oxygen and hydrogen using a special fuel cell which will be used to generate electricity to power a small motor vehicle. Your vehicle must transport a ‘passenger' in a specialized direction over a hard surface. The one that goes the farthest wins!
Brought to you by the University of Sydney, School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
For years 7-10
Forensic Frenzy is a hands-on workshop in which students assume the role of forensic scientists to solve a crime. During the workshop students will use forensic techniques to examine evidence including: chromatography of inks; identification of blood stains, fabric, soil and hair fibres; comparison of suspects' DNA profiles with those taken from the scene; facial identification and reconstruction and dental records; ballistics, footprints and fingerprints; comparison of handwriting samples, oil stains, typefaces and stamp marks; treating samples to detect the presence of hidden evidence.
Brought to you by CSIRO Education
For years 9-11
Discovering DNA is a hands-on program appropriate for stage 5 students. Students will perform 2 experiments, an extraction of DNA from peas and a gel electrophoresis experiment. The program addresses syllabus outcomes 5.3 (applications of science), 5.5 (current issues and developments) and 5.8 (Watson - Crick Model of DNA).
Brought to you by CSIRO Educaiton
For years 7-10
An interactive hands-on workshop that demonstrates how robots really work. Using the brand new NXT system, students complete a series of challenges that incorporate the use of environmental sensors and basic programming.
Brought to you by Fizzics Education
