Mathematics is the science of structure, order and relation. It has evolved from elemental practices of counting, measuring and describing the shapes of objects. It deals with logical reasoning and quantitative calculation. Mathematics plays an important role in science and commerce in our modern society. The development of mathematic thought has grown with other scientific and technological disciplines, as we have required more complex mathematics to solve problems and explain observations like predicting the effect of global warming on the environment.

Careers in Mathematics

People with mathematical and statistical skills are in demand in virtually every industry. They are keenly sought after by many businesses, especially those associated with financial services and information technology.

Mathematics is needed in almost all research including scientific, medical, technological, engineering and industrial. Any job that requires the interpretation of information and the ability to make forecasts and decisions needs a mathematical background.

Statisticians and mathematicians often work in major corporations and in the public sector, where their skills are essential for policy planning, for example in health and market research, various planning and analytical roles in manufacturing, logistics and government. Statistical and mathematical modellers are employed in banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions.
